Local theater folk cry foul over playwright’s $25K fine for hosting ‘talkbacks’ – Twin Cities

Guthrie Theater has never performed a play by David Mamet on its main stages and, given the playwright’s recent statements, that may not change any time soon.

The Guthrie is committed to ongoing conversations with theatergoers — the theater hired director of community engagement Carra Martinez 11 months ago — but an edict by Mamet would make that both tricky and expensive.

Last month, he said theaters that host any sort of chat with the audience in the two hours after performing one of his plays will be fined $25,000 for each “violation” and lose rights to the play.
