‘A Walk in the Woods’ vs. A Walk in the Woods: On Reading as a Substitute for Experience

I can relate to this essay and the author so much that I could have written it myself. If you are stunned by the changes adulthood has brought on in your life, how you spend your days, the little time you spend just “doing” things… then you must read this. It applies not only to those of us who rely on books for our vicarious life fulfillment, but also to those who obsessively rely on Social Media or the Internet it general for that life experience.

Broadway actor tells local students: Art pays off | Life | daily-journal.com

Personally, I would love to see more well-known success stories in each industry making themselves available to our educational system for workshops and/or lectures.  You can never underestimate the power of motivation and the power of experiencing the first-hand stories of success in a chosen field or topic.

Schools that don’t have a big enough budget to bring someone “famous” in could band together with other schools in their county – maybe hold a shared workshop or lecture hall.

This would be beneficial to almost all topics our youth follow and are maybe considering a career in – Sports, Science, The Arts, The Trades, etc. – bring those in who have succeeded in their chosen interest and have them explain how they did it – what it took – share their failures & successes to give the youth a leg up on what to expect and what it’s going to take to achieve their goals.

Education should be a community effort – involve all facets of a community. The school should simply be the centralized location from which it is organized and day-to-day instruction takes place.  But everywhere in your community should be a “classroom” and each of us a “teacher”.

You can’t just love acting, said Broadway Actor Don Richard to the teens gathered at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School on Saturday. You have to know the business side, too.

2003 – September in Nantucket

Over the two years our family lived on Nantucket Island I took a lot of photos, like thousands.  As much as I want to share all of them with you, I realize this isn’t very practical – for either of us.  So, I have instead decided to try and break them down into smaller chunks.  When there isn’t really a common theme, I’ll just use the calendar.

So, my first gallery from Nantucket is simply the photos I took during September of 2003 – our first month “on island”.  Enjoy.
