On a quest to reimagine comics, Andrews McMeel launches animation contest


As Andrews McMeel Universal looks to the future of comic strips, it’s working to attract a new generation of talent and reimagine what comics could be. Part of the Kansas City-based company’s vision involves tapping into short-form animated videos, and it’s kicking off that initiative with a GoComics Short Shorts Animation Contest open to the U.S. and Canada.

Digital animation isn’t reserved for the big studios anymore, thanks to today’s affordable animation tools.

11-year-old animation prodigy wins award for short film

The first time he could hold a pencil, Robbie Macartney discovered his passion for drawing.

“He’s been drawing since before he could even talk,” Macartney’s mother told CTV News.

At only 11 years old, the young filmmaker has lived out one of his dreams and created an animated film, which has gained attention at film festivals internationally.

She graduated from UArts only three weeks ago. Now she’s illustrating the cover of the New Yorker

Many illustrators spend their whole career dreaming of landing a cover for the New Yorker. For Loveis Wise, it took less than a month after graduating from college to realize that achievement.

A Washington native, Wise studied illustration, painting, and woodcuts at the University of the Arts. One of her latest works, Nurture, is the cover of the New Yorker’s June 4 Fiction Issue, themed around parenting, childhood, and the intersection between the two.
